CONGRESS EXTENDS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
Dear Building Trades Leader:
The United States Senate last night voted unanimously to extend unemployment benefits by as much as 14 weeks to out-of-work Americans who have exhausted their jobless benefits, or would do so by year's end.
The legislation - which had been languishing in the Senate for weeks - still required a 60 vote super-majority to cot off debate, as Senate Republicans continued to block the legislation (despite the unanimous vote at the end). The bill now goes to the U.S. House of Representatives, who are expected to quickly approve it today, and then onto the White House for President Obama's signature.
With kind, personal regards, I am,
Sincerely and fraternally,
Mark H. Ayers
President
