Massachusetts’ Building Trades Unions condemn the tragic death of George Floyd, the killing of Ahmaud Arbery while jogging in Georgia, the racist phone call by Amy Cooper in Central Park and far too many other instances of racism (there is no other word for it) we have seen for too long against our black and brown brothers and sisters.
We stand united in our demand that all people in this country be treated fairly and equally under the law. No person should have to fear being approached by the police in this country because of their race or the color of their skin. No person should be threatened to have the police called on them because of their race or the color of their skin.
We need to bring this country together and demand that the United States lives up to the central theme of our founding document, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Otherwise they are not rights, just empty words that ring hollow.
